The Gift for People Who Have Everything: A Pottery Class in Tampa
Every year someone asks me what to get the person who already has everything. My answer is the same: give them two hours at the wheel and let them make something.

I'm Haley. I run Floridian Ceramics, a small pottery studio in Seminole Heights, and a good chunk of the people who walk through my door in December and January are here because someone loved them enough to skip the scented candle.
A pottery class is a strange, wonderful gift. It takes up no shelf space. It can't be the wrong size. And unlike almost everything else under the tree, it turns into two more gifts a few weeks later, when the bowls they made come out of the kiln.
Why it works as a gift
It's an afternoon, not an object
The people who are hardest to buy for usually don't want more stuff. They want a reason to put the phone down and do something with their hands. Two hours at the wheel is exactly that. Nobody has ever opened a gift card to a pottery class and said "oh, another one of these."
They get to pick the day
The card covers an Intro to Wheel Throwing class, and the person you give it to books whichever date suits them straight from the website. Tuesday morning, Saturday at ten, a Friday they take off work. No guessing at their calendar.
They leave with something they made
In the class they center the clay, pull the walls, and throw two bowls, then paint them with underglaze before they leave. I take it from there: drying, trimming, a bisque firing, a clear glaze, and a second firing. Two to three weeks later they pick up two finished bowls that are entirely theirs. Lopsided, maybe. Loved, definitely.
"It was my first time making pottery, and Haley was an amazing teacher! I had so much fun and love my piece!"
How the gift card works
We sell e-gift cards through Square, so there's nothing to mail and nothing to lose. You buy it, it lands in their inbox (or yours, if you'd rather print it and tuck it in a card), and they redeem it when they book.
If you'd like one, send me a note with the name of the person it's for and I'll have it on its way the same day.
Who this is for
The friend who says she's "not creative." The dad who has every tool already. A couple who'd rather do something than own something. The coworker you drew in the office exchange and genuinely like. Anyone who has ever said, out loud, "I've always wanted to try that."
And yes, we make a lot more than bowls here. Mugs, planters, platters, pieces you'll find on the shelves when you visit. If you're local, come by the studio and I'll help you pick something handmade to go with the card.
Floridian Ceramics is a working pottery studio in Tampa's Seminole Heights neighborhood, run by Haley Melcher, a fourth-generation Floridian. Beginner classes run year-round, no experience needed.
